The U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is warning consumers not to purchase Advil products as they are still in the middle of their medicine cabinets.
Advil, a popular anti-inflammatory drug, is one of those products made in the U. and sold under the name Nexium.
“In many countries, the product is labeled as being a prescription medication that contains an ingredient known as esomeprazole magnesium. It’s not a controlled substance,” the FDA said.
“Advil products are only available on prescription and are not authorized to be sold by the FDA,” the agency said. The product may not be available for use on the consumer’s local pharmacy or other public health resources.
Advil is one of several products that can contain the ingredients known as esomeprazole, but is not a controlled substance. The FDA has not yet approved the product for sale.
“When you buy a product that contains an ingredient known as esomeprazole, you are buying a dangerous combination of health risks and a potentially fatal side effect,” the FDA said in its alert.
Advil products that contain other prescription drugs include Xanax, used to treat anxiety and chronic pain, and a number of over-the-counter products sold as a way to relieve symptoms of osteoporosis.
While the FDA warning is meant to scare consumers away from buying Advil products, it is not meant to cause any harm, the agency said.
“The FDA does not regulate prescription drugs under the Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act, which is the federal health care program, and it does not allow pharmaceutical companies to promote prescription drug promotion,” the agency said.
In June, a company called GlaxoSmithKline announced that they will not sell Nexium, a pain reliever, as a prescription drug. The company is not releasing details about the potential sale of Nexium.Advil was first approved for use in the United States by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in August 1996, and is on the list of approved products by the agency.
